In December 2001 The Council of the European Union published Directive No. 2001/115/CE.
Two key landmarks are defined in said document for the development and acceptance of electronic invoices in the European scenario: in first place it expressly authorised the sending of invoices by electronic means and, in second place, 1st January 2004 was established as the last date for the entry into force, by all of the member states, of the statuory provisions stated in said directive.
